Create an Account – athenahealth (2024)

An athenahealth account lets you access a range of healthcare apps built by athenahealth, healthcare providers, and other participating developers using a single email and password. You can use this email and password anywhere you see the “Log in with athenahealth” button, including patient portals and other applications you use to manage your health records from various healthcare providers.

Important: To comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), patients under the age of 13 cannot create self-registered Patient Portal accounts, and the medical treatment facility cannot register or invite new Patient Portal users under the age of 13.

For patients under 13 years old, it is recommend that medical treatment facilities set up a family access account for a parent or other caregiver to access to the patient’s health and billing information.

athenahealth Account Password Requirements

To create a secure athenahealth password, your password must:

  • be between 8 and 20 characters
  • have at least one uppercase letter
  • have at least one lowercase letter
  • have at least one number or symbol

athenahealth Account Security Option

We require you to set up a security option (in addition to your password) to help ensure only you can access your athenahealth account. The security option you choose determines how you can confirm your identity to access your account if you forget your password.

No. Setting up your security option is a one-time process: You will only need your email and password the next time you log in, and you will only need to confirm your security option if you are resetting your password.

Which security option is best? The best security option for you is one that you can confirm readily and is unique to you. For example, if you choose either the “Call me” or “Text me” option, the phone number you use should be one that:

  • only you (or an approved family member or caregiver) have access to.
  • you use regularly and can have nearby when logging in with athenahealth.
  • is associated with a mobile phone that can receive text (SMS) messages if you chose “Text me”, otherwise you’ll need to choose “Call me” as your security option if you would like to use a landline.

If you choose to use a security question, you will be asked to pick a question from the dropdown list and enter your own personalized answer. The question you choose is the question you’ll be given if you forget your password, and you’ll need to provide the same answer you enter here to gain access to your account. Therefore, you should pick a security question that:

  • you can remember easily or tend to give the same answer to each time
  • only you (or an approved family member or caregiver) would know the correct answer

When providing your answer, you can disregard capitalization since answers are not case-sensitive. However, you do need to remember any punctuation or spaces you use in your answer, since you’ll need to include these when entering this same answer in the future (e.g. if you forget your password).

Ways to Create athenahealth Patient Portal Account

If your healthcare provider uses athenahealth Patient Portal, there are a few ways you can create an account with us to access your Patient Portal. Patients and family members can register for the Patient Portal in several ways:

  • Patient Portal email invitation
  • Notification email, such as an appointment reminder or notice that a lab result has been published to the Patient Portal
  • During an office visit (see To register a patient for the Patient Portal or Patient Information Center in the office)

Some practices using athenahealth products offer Patient Portal access on the homepage of their website. Just look for the Patient Portal link and click on it to be taken to the Patient Portal welcome page. Once there, click the sign-up link below theLog in with athenahealth button. This will take you to the registration page, where you can create your athenahealth account.

If you’re having issues finding the Patient Portal link on your provider’s website, you can contact their office for the correct URL or to request an email invitation to their Patient Portal.

How to Create athenahealth Patient Portal Account from an email invitation

Patients and family members are prompted to create an athenahealth account when they register for the Patient Portal.

Following are instructions for a patient or family member who is creating a Patient Portal account for the first time from an email invitation or an athenaCommunicator notification email.

Step 1: Click the Patient Portal link in the email.

In a Patient Portal invitation email, the link is Create My Account. In a lab result email, the link is View Results. The Create your new password page appears.

Step 2: Confirm your email address and enter your password twice. After you review the Terms and Conditions and the Privacy Policy, check the box and click Create account.

You are prompted to select a security option to protect your account. This one- time setup enables you to confirm your identity in the future if you forget your password.

Step 3: Select a security option and then click the setup button below that option.

  • Text me (recommended) — Receive a verification code by text message.
  • Call me — Receive a verification code by phone call.
    • Note: Select this option if you entered the number of a landline phone.
  • Security Question — Select a security question from a list of questions.

Step 4: If you selected Text me or Call me:

  • Enter your phone number and then click Send code (for text message) or Call (for phone call).
  • Enter the verification code you received by text message or phone call, and then click Verify.

Step 5: If you selected Security Question, select a question from the list, enter the answer, and then click Save.

Important: If you enter any spaces or special characters (such as punctuation marks or underscores) in your answer, you will need to enter the same spaces and special characters in the future. The athenahealth account does not distinguish uppercase letters from lowercase letters.

Step 6: If you set up a security question, or if you entered a recovery phone number that differs from the phone number in your patient record, you must verify access to the phone number on file with your healthcare provider.

  • Select Text or Call to receive a verification code at the phone number displayed in the message.
  • Enter the verification code you received by text message or phone call, and then click Verify.

Step 7: If you initiated your Patient Portal registration from a lab result email or during the online check-in workflow, you may see the Choose your patient relationship page. This page asks whether you are the patient or another person (family member or guardian) who manages the patient’s account.

Step 8: Click I am or I manage ‘s account.

Step 9. If you click I manage ‘s account, you must enter your name, email address, and date of birth. This information is associated with your athenahealth account.

Step 10: Click Continue. A confirmation page appears.

Step 11: On the confirmation page, click Continue.

The home page of your Patient Portal appears. Note: When you log in to the Patient Portal in the future, you will need to enter only your email address and password.
