Ingredient Notes
Big Mac Casserole
Full recipe with measurements located in the recipe card.
- lean ground beef: Feel free to substitute ground turkey if desired. A bit healthier than beef, but you really can’t tell any difference in taste in the casserole.
- yellow onion or white onion
- minced garlic
- spices: Salt, black pepper, garlic powder, ground mustard powder, and onion powder.
- sweet potatoes: I used peeled and cubed sweet potatoes for a bit of a healthier spin for my family, but you can use Yukon gold potatoes, Russet potatoes, or even frozen tater tots/hash browns if desired.
- cheddar cheese
- shredded lettuce
- cherry tomatoes
- dill pickles
- splash of Worcestershire sauce: I recommend checking labels for a gluten-free version if you are gluten intolerant. Otherwise, the recipe is completely gluten-free.
Big Mac Sauce
- cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt: Feel free to use low-fat or full-fat, depending on your preferences.
- mayonnaise
- ketchup
- yellow mustard
- spices: paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder.
- pickles chopped or dill relish
- white vinegar
- pickle juice
- splash of Worcestershire sauce
- mayo: optional
Step-by-Step Instructions
Big Mac Casserole
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it into crumbles. Drain any excess grease. Add ¾ cup diced onions and minced garlic to the skillet with the cooked beef. Cook until the onions are tender and translucent.
- Season the beef mixture with a splash of Worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- In a separate skillet, sauté the sweet potato cubes until they are just tender.
- In a greased 9×13 baking dish, add the cooked sweet potatoes, ground beef mixture, and half the Big Mac sauce. Mix until everything is combined. Sprinkle the shredded cheese on top of the casserole.
- Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool slightly.
- Top the casserole with the fresh lettuce, halved cherry tomatoes, diced pickles, and diced onions. Drizzle with more Big Mac Sauce.
Big Mac Sauce
- Add all the sauce ingredients except the chopped pickles to a food processor and blend until smooth. Once blended, add in the diced pickles and mix with a spoon until combined.
Mac’s Pro TipS
Expert Tips
- Potatoes: If you opt for crispy tater tots, diced potatoes, or hash browns, make sure to cook them first before adding to the casserole. For frozen potatoes, cook according to package instructions until golden brown and cooked through (I recommend the air fryer!). For raw, diced potatoes, cook them the same way as the sweet potatoes in the recipe, but adjust the cooking times if needed.
- Keto Big Mac Casserole: If you’re keto, omit the potatoes and make everything else the same! It will still be a delicious casserole with all the classic Big Mac flavors.
Storage Tips
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven, and enjoy!
If you have leftover sauce, store it in a separate airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Use it as a salad dressing, dip, or on sandwiches. If desired, you can store it in a freezer-safe container in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.
Recipe FAQs
Is Thousand Island the same as Big Mac sauce?
They are made with similar ingredients but are not exactly the same.
Can I make the Big Mac Sauce with something else besides cottage cheese?
Feel free to use either Greek yogurt or mayonnaise in place of the cottage cheese.
Big Mac’s don’t have tomatoes. Do I have to add that?
I love adding tomatoes, but you certainly don’t have to. Traditionally, a Big Mac does not have tomatoes.
Can I make this recipe dairy-free?
For sure! Simply use your favorite dairy-free shredded cheese and sub mayo or a dairy free yogurt for the sauce.
