Princess Diana's story has been adapted for the screen quite a few times, from Naomi Watts' 2013 movie Diana to the latest seasons of The Crown.

However, Kristen Stewart's Oscar-nominated movie Spencer offered a unique perspective on the Princess of Wales, so make sure to catch it on TV tonight — the movie is airing on Channel 4 at 9pm.

Don't worry if you miss it, though, as it will be available to watch on Channel 4's streaming platform shortly after.

Directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, Spencer takes place over four days on the Sandringham Estate, where the Royal Family is spending the Christmas festivities.

Diana feels almost like a stranger, shrinking under the scrutiny of her political family and frustrated at the cold indifference of her husband Prince Charles (played by Jack Farthing). The movie follows the people's princess through a psychological journey that feels like a nightmare, showing Diana's struggles with mental health and eating disorders.

Also starring Timothy Spall, Sean Harris and Sally Hawkins, Spencer was originally released in November 2021. Stewart was nominated for an Oscar for her critically acclaimed performance.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy in 2021, the actor praised the movie, saying it's "straightforward" and "not plot-heavy", as it focuses on psychological aspects of the character.

"It was either sort of drowning in immense space or so close that it was like this... choking thing," she explained.

She added: "If you were an alien that just dropped down onto the Earth and didn't know about the royal family or Diana, or what ultimately happened, the movie would make no sense.

"We bring our memories and our projections to the film. And so it's very curious and sort of psychotropic."

Spencer airs on Channel 4 tonight at 9pm and will be available to watch on Channel 4's streaming platform afterwards.
