METRO SUNDAY, APRIL 20, 2003 www.STLtoday.com D7 LORI ANN COOK THE (BLOOMINGTON) PANTAGRAPH John Beagles demonstrates calligraphy recently at his home in Lexington, Ill. For two decades, Beagles produced law licenses for the Illinois Supreme Court. THE WRITE STUFF Retired calligrapher fashions notes for special occasions in Illinois town BY BOB HOLLIDAY The (Bloomington) Pantagraph LEXINGTON, Ill.

John used his mouth to wet the tip of his pen before dipping it into an ink well. His aged and slightly unsteady hand moved the pen in smooth, flowing strokes and the name "John R. Beagles" appeared in ornate letters on a scrap of paper. Beagles retired as a calligrapher in 1989, 1 but he still can illustrate how to use letters to create art. After penning his name, Beagles, 77, wrote "Lexington" in similar ornate form.

The former resident of Springfield, who performed calligraphy for the Illinois Supreme Court and other clients for two decades, now lives in Lexington, Ill. His hands aren't as steady now and cataracts bother him, but he still dabbles in his basem*nt studio, making cards for friends and relatives. "My inspiration comes in doing the job so that all who look at it are pleased," he said as he made a few more strokes with his pen. Although Beagles had no formal training, he produced elegant law licenses for the state's high court to present to new lawyers. He also loved doing wedding invitations because they represented happy occasions.

The recipients of his calligraphy these days include his stepdaughter, Shirley Armstrong, who lives in Lexington. She is the reason Beagles moved to Lexington after retirement. "It's a small and friendly community," Beagles said. Armstrong said Beagles is kind and friendly, "and waves to everybody." "I wave at them all. I'm not sure if I know them or not because of these cataracts," Beagles said, adding that the world could use more friendliness anyway.
